01/30/2022 Myanmar (International Christian Concern) – The picture of a nun pleading with police not to harm the armless in Myanmar’s Kachin state has touched many hearts last year, as her bravery saved many people’s lives during a standoff between the Burmese Army (Tatmadaw) and the protesters.
A year later, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng has been detained and interrogated several times by security forces, after her face and name were publicized. They checked her cell phone and took pictures of her.
According to AFP, although she is not involved with politics, she is now too scared to go out alone. “I no longer have freedom,” the nun said.
In the last few months, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng has continued to assist displaced persons in Myitkyina and provide care for COVID-19 patients at the city’s Catholic Missionary Clinic as she was previously trained as a nurse.
Yet, as fighting between the Tatmadaw and anti-coup groups continues throughout the country, with many casualties and tens of thousands displaced, “It feels like my heart is going to burst,” Sister Ann Rose said.
But her faith gives her hope and a sense of purpose. “Thanks to God, I am alive … Maybe He wants to use me for good.”
