Pakistani Christian Journalist Resigns Following Years of Harassment and Discrimination

11/17/2019 Pakistan (International Christian Concern) – According to Asia News, Gonila Gill, the only Christian journalist registered with the Lahore Press Club, has resigned from her post as a journalist because of harassment and discrimination from her coworkers. According to Gill, she faced harassment because of her identity as a Christian.

Since 2002, Gill as worked as a journalist covering discrimination faced by Pakistan’s minority communities. In 2014, she married Husnain Jamil, a Muslim journalist, in secret. The couple decided not to “impose” their faith on one another and respected each other’s religious traditions.

It was at this point that Gill began to face harassment from her coworkers. “They told me that I would never get pregnant until I converted,” Gill explained to Asia News. Her husband was also harassed and called an “infidel” by fundamentalists.

After four years of marriage, the couple had their first child, a son they named Abraham. The couple decided to raise Abraham as a Christian and had him baptized. Because of this, Gill began facing more intense harassment.

Eventually, after years of harassment, Gill decided to quit her post as a journalist. “People are vile,” she told Asia News. “They talk rubbish about my faith. However, I will not lose hope and remain steadfast in my religion.
