01/20/2019 Pakistan (International Christian Concern) – On Saturday, January 12, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the federal and provincial governments to pay compensation to individuals damaged by the protests that following the acquittal of Asia Bibi. The court gave the government 30 days to fulfill this order.
Bibi, a Christian woman formally accused of blasphemy and on death row, was acquitted by the Supreme Court on October 31, 2018. Following the announcement of her acquittal, Islamic hardliners took to the streets in protest for nearly three days. These protests brought the country to a standstill and left many properties damaged.
Agreeing to the court order, a section officer of the Ministry of the Interior said, “We will make the payments this month.”
While it has almost been three months since her acquittal, Bibi continues to live like a prisoner in Pakistan. Hiding at an unknown location protected by security forces, Bibi and her family have yet to be allowed to flee the country.
