Pakistan Arrests Islamist Leader of Asia Bibi Protests

Authorities in Pakistan have arrested the leader of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan Party, Khadim Hussain Rizvi. Rizvi was responsible for organizing the violent and nationwide protests that followed the acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman formally on death row for blasphemy.

Rizvi announced that a new wave of protests would start on November 25 to “pay tribute to the martyrs of his party.” He also publically threatened the Supreme Court Justices following their announcement that the court had acquitted Bibi.

Bibi was accused of blasphemy following an argument with Muslim coworkers in June 2009. In November 2010, Bibi was convicted and sentenced to death. Since then Bibi’s case has remained one of the most religiously charged issues in Pakistan.
