The Head of the Institute of National Remembrance calls the Russian Babyn Yar project “poor quality”

Anton Drobovych, Head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, believes that the Russian Babyn Yar memorialization project is not very high-quality and is being implemented improperly.

He said this in an interview with Glavkom.

“This project is very controversial and generates an incredible number of scandals, and is being implemented improperly,” Drobovych said.

However, in his opinion, it cannot be said that this project marks the victory of Russian propaganda. “To say this, we need to have reinforced concrete evidence about the hostility of the intentions of that project. But we do not have a court or law enforcement decision on it. We have only value judgments, ” Drobovych said

He added that he does not agree with all the judgments about this project. “First of all, people who talk about “zrada” in Babyn Yar do not distinguish between a state Nature Reserve and other initiatives. The fact that a private project was not performed diligently and with due quality, I agree with this, but to talk about Putin’s Trojan horse, you need to have more good reasons, “Drobovych believes.

According to him, the Ukrainian Institute appealed to the government and security services with certain reservations about the Russian project. “Everything that we could have done, we did: I informed the minister, came out with certain reservations to the government, appealed to the security services. We supervised the search operations when they were conducted by a private memorial center. They expressed their attitude both publicly and at closed government meetings. We reported everything that the Memorial Center did with errors or incorrectly. They also gave their own vision of how to do better, and implemented high-quality projects in Babyn Yar both independently and with partners. So my conscience is clear about this, ” Drobovych said.

He also noted that there is no clear project of the Russian director Ilya Hrzhanovsky. “You will not find a single document that would clearly show what exactly the Memorial Center plans to do in Babyn Yar. There is a certain 10-page artistic concept that does not contain any specifics. What is conditional, I reiterate: conditional, is that it can be considered a project of Hrzhanovsky, it was presented at the forum “Ukraine 30″. But it was a set of sketches that were not related to each other. Therefore, there is only one clear concept – this is the concept developed by the Working Group at the National Academy of Sciences,” said the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.

In 2016, on the initiative and at the expense of Russian businessmen Mikhail Fridman, Pavel Fuchs and German Khan, the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center was founded.

As you know, Ukrainian Jews expressed strong disagreement with the project of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, initiated and funded by Russian billionaires, as such, which should become a weapon for Russian propaganda in its quest to discredit our state in the world.

Recently, the British edition of The Independent published an article about the Babyn Yar memorial in Kyiv called “Holocaust Disneyland”, funded by Russia, raises concerns and suspicions in Ukraine.”
