In preparation for the upcoming Africa & African Diaspora Conference, the World Council of Churches (WCC) is hosting a pre-conference webinar discussion on 15 October. The Africa & African Diaspora Conference is scheduled for 23-29 October.

The discussion will set the stage for the conference by focusing on the centrality of racism in the experiences of Africans (on the continent or in the diaspora). Speakers and participants will explore the manifestations of racism and how it is experienced by Africans in the different regions of the world.

In order to accommodate major time differences across the globe, the webinar will be held twice and will be moderated by the conveners of the Africa & African Diaspora Conference, including Rev. Dr Frank Chikane, moderator of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, and Rev. Dr Angelique Walker-Smith, member of the WCC central committee.

Opening and closing remarks will be conveyed by Prof. Dr Isabel Apawo Phiri, WCC deputy general secretary for Public Witness and Diakonia.

Confirmed panellists include:

  • Dr Catherine S. Namakula, vice chair, UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent
  • Richard Reddie, director of Justice and Inclusion, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland
  • Rev. Dr Karen Georgia Thompson, general synod administrator, United Church of Christ, USA
