12/05/2019 Sudan (International Christian Concern) – Nasreldin Mofreh, Sudan’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments and part of Sudan’s transitional military council, recently commented that he aims to “promote a sense of justice between Muslims and Christians”.
Mofreh and the transitional council hosted a workshop on churches role in peace and development, aiming to empower religious leaders in their communities. After the end of Omar al-Bashir’s reign in 2019, Mofreh reflected promising that Christians who suffered “very bad practices” under al-Bashir, have the right to practice their faith freely. He also promised that property taken from Christians and churches would be returned.
The Religious Affairs Department has continued plans to restrict and thwart extremist ideologies and also temper sharia law that limits women dress in the country.
The Sudan transitional government will be in place for 39 months in a power-sharing agreement before national elections take place. While Christians in Sudan have received a promise of increased security and status, stability in the country remains fragile.
