Kapit Church in Sarawak Broken Into, Desecrated by Young Men

02/03/2019 Malaysia (International Christian Concern) – At least four men had broken into the Church of Mary Immaculate Conception in Kapit, Sarawak in the morning of January 26.

They had broken into the Catholic church through a side door, desecrated the altar and tabernacle, before stealing fan, wheelchairs, copper wire, and A/V system.

Sarawak police soon arrested the four suspects after a police report was lodged by the church officials. Two are still at large.

“We have arrested four local unemployed men and recovered most of the stolen items,” said Sarawak CID Chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dennis Leong.

“The suspects are aged 17 to 22. We have remanded them for further probe,” he added. Initial drug test results also came back positive for all of them.

According to The Malaysian Insight, Catholics in Malaysia have been urged by Bishop of Sibu Joseph Hii Teck Kwong to hold special prayers on February 1 as “spiritual reparation” after the 137-year-old church was damaged and desecrated by drug addicts.
