The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit met last week with Rev. Miguel Salanic, from Guatemala,  in Geneva, Switzerland. They discussed the role of indigenous people as part of the living WCC fellowship and the preparations leading up to the WCC 11th Assembly to be held in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2021.

Tveit said it was good to meet with Salanic, who has a long history of service at the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI), and get an update on the reality facing indigenous people, and receive news about ecumenical collaboration in Latin America. He added that he would like to see a renewed regional ecumenical body in the region that would enable solid cooperation with the WCC on indigenous people’s concerns.

Tveit added: “Their understanding of reconciliation and unity would be a critical contribution to the interpretation of the assembly theme and the assembly as such.”

Salanic´s visit to the WCC happens in the context of his trip to Europe to attend the 2nd Global Mennonite Peace Conference in the Netherlands.
