Marriage and traditional family in the U.S. under broader assault
The Family Watch International organization has released some recent facts and developments that would put marriage and traditional family in the United States in real danger, reports Christian Telegraph. Here are some of them:
- Several weeks ago, same-sex marriage advocates in the Maryland legislature introduced a bill that would replace the word “marriage” in the state family code with the phrase “valid domestic partnership.” These domestic partnerships would also be available to same-sex couples and would eliminate the option for couples to be married civilly. While marriages performed by religions would not be affected and would still be legal, the bill would essentially withdraw state support for this vital social institution.
- The New York Supreme Court is preparing to hear an appeal on a case filed by two lesbians married in Canada to force a public employer to provide “spousal benefits.” A lower court has already ruled that these benefits must be provided.
- Also in New York, a Supreme Court judge has refused to dismiss a divorce suit filed by one partner in another Canadian same-sex marriage. This action, which will be appealed, further sets the stage for the state to recognize these marriages as binding in the state.
- In Colorado, two lesbians who applied for and were refused a marriage license staged a sit in to protest. The trespass charges against them are a set up to challenge the state’s marriage amendment.
Family Watch International, with the help of the prestigious Marriage Law Foundation will continue to file briefs in all the important cases.
Since the Massachusetts decision, those attacking marriage have recently suffered a string of 10 straight losses in the U.S. appellate court cases. Since they are losing the fight in the courts they are now increasingly launching attacks on marriage in state legislatures in the states that do not have state marriage amendments such as Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. The Maryland bill mentioned above is the most extreme example because it seeks to abolish civil marriage entirely.
