Commentary: UK continues to dismantle Christian values

Commentary by Alex Spak, legal and policy analyst from Great Britain

The yesterday’s vote in the House of Lords clearly represents the eagerness of the homosexual community to trample upon anything which goes contrary to their lifestyle, even if they have to use undemocratic means to achieve their goals. This is another outrageous step in dismantling the Judeo-Christian heritage of the Western societies.

The amendment to the Equality Bill was introduced by an openly homosexual Lord Alli, and backed by a number of liberal Bishops, to change the law on Civil Partnerships and allow them to be performed in Churches and/or with religious language. It does not compel churches to perform homosexual civil partnerships, but merely allows them to register them.

However, it is a tactical step by the homosexual activists because the vote effectively removes one of the final distinctions between Marriage and Civil Partnerships.

In January 2010, the Government had resisted Lord Alli’s amendment, reassuring the public that it was ‘not a workable solution to this issue’. However, in an unexpected move, the government suddenly(!) allowed its Peers a free vote on the issue. The Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats also gave its Peers a free vote.

We must be very careful with way this vote had passed the House of Lords last night. It should be very important for anyone who is interested in democracy!

The amendment was voted through at 11pm , by 95 votes to 21, when there was an extraordinarily low number of Peers for such an important matter. It is highly likely that such time was chosen strategically, when many Peers who would have voted against it were not in the House. Baroness Royall of Blaisdon (Minister) asked the House:

‘We want to take the time to listen to the wide spectrum of views, including from the faith communities, LGB representatives, and those who work as registrars. We will consider the whole range of options to gain a clearer understanding of the impact of the issues involved before deciding how to proceed.’

However, she was disregarded and the amendment was debated for less than 1 hour and was voted through literally at the eleventh hour, taking everybody by surprise. Giving 1 hour for a debate of such importance when the majority of opposing Peers are not present is a disgrace and a clear manipulation of the parliamentary system.

It is not the first time that constitutional misdeeds have been used to force through law that significantly favours homosexual activists. In 2006, the same Lord Alli introduced amendments to the Equality Bill 2005/6 at the very last moment, which led to the creation of the Sexual Orientation Regulations 2007. These highly controversial and divisive regulations were passed through on without any debate at all in the House of Commons and amongst other things have led to the closing of Catholic adoption agencies, which served disadvantaged children for many centuries.

Homosexual activists have previously made it clear that any change in the law would only be a step towards forcing churches to perform homosexual civil partnerships. For example, Ben Summerskill, Head of Stonewall, a homosexual pressure group, recently said: ‘Right now, faiths shouldn’t be forced to hold civil partnerships, although in ten or 20 years, that may change.’
