US Lutheran remembered for his commitment to church unity

The Rev. William Lazareth, a US Lutheran leader, scholar and advocate for church unity, is being remembered for his contributions to Christian theological dialogue at national and international levels, reports Ecumenical News International. Lazareth died on 23 February of cancer at Bar Harbor, in the US state of Maine, aged 79. "The ecclesial, theological and ecumenical legacy that he leaves will bless the people of the church for generations to come," said the Rev. Mark Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Hanson highlighted Lazareth's role in overseeing the drafting of a 1982 World Council of Churches text on "Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry", which the presiding bishop described as "one of the most influential documents of the 20th century".
