Calvary Chapel missionaries in Haiti continue to see miracles

Two Calvary Chapel missionaries in Haiti credit God’s hand of protection for their narrow escape from danger in the Port-au-Prince earthquake. Believing God spared their lives for a purpose, they continue to report on miracles they see, reports Mark Ellis, senior correspondent, ASSIST News Service.

Pastor Huguener “Bastia” Bastia and his wife Betty minister at a Calvary Chapel located in rural Caneille, Haiti, outside the capital. But they traveled to Port-au-Prince to celebrate their wedding anniversary on the day the earthquake struck, and barely survived, “due to nothing short of a miracle of God,” according to Betty.

Betty was in a grocery store in Port-au-Prince and Bastia was across the street in a barbershop when the quake hit. “All around me, I was aware that things were falling, but nothing touched me,” Betty notes.

Bastia ran for the barbershop’s exit door when he realized the seriousness of the quake, but was not able to get out after a huge slab of cement fell from above and stopped precariously above his head.

“Gods’ angels were holding up the cement to not crush him,” Betty believes. Bastia found a small hole to crawl through and escaped.

When the couple drove by the same barbershop the next morning, and it had totally collapsed. “Bastia would have died if that had happened while he was in the building,” she notes.

Betty tells about five children trapped under the rubble of a home in Port-au-Prince. Two of the children were trapped under the house for four days. Fortunately, a neighbor heard noises from the rubble, came with a hammer, and was able to extricate the children.

Sadly, their father had died and their mother was missing and presumed dead. On the morning of the quake, the children’s mother went to sell items in the marketplace.

“Last Sunday was the birthday of the mom, and it was a sad day,” Betty notes. Special time was set aside to be with the children. They received food, coke, and candy to try to brighten their day.

Against all odds, one of the girls said she believed her mother was still alive and God would reunite them. “We cannot lose faith,” were her words.

“Her hopeful faith touched the hearts of all present,” Betty notes, but it had been over a month since the earthquake and there was no word or sign of their mother.

On February 15, Bastia dropped off the oldest girl in a neighboring village with some money to buy shoes and clothes for her and her siblings.

While she was there she received a phone call from the Dominican Republic. It was her mother! “What an incredible miracle!” Betty rejoices. The faith of a child – literally, childlike faith, was rewarded once more by a gracious God.
