A church under the supervision of the missionary organization, Friends Missionary Prayer Band, was set on fire by a group of unknown miscreants in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh state, India, reports James Varghese, special correspondent in India for ASSIST News Service.
The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) reports that the damage was so extensive that a new church will have to be built in its place.
According to the GCIC, the criminals broke into the church premises, doused it with several gallons of kerosene, and set it in fire, causing the thatched-roof house of worship to burn to the ground.
The source said the alarm was raised by neighbors who saw the blaze and informed Pastor G. Timothy, the minister of burned church, about the situation.
A complaint was later lodged by A. John David Raj, the local district representative of the Friends Missionary Prayer Band at the nearby Kalakada Police Station and the District Superintendent of Police and other investigating experts went straight to the spot and promised a detailed report on the incident.
