Polish Catholic radio that stirred controversy loses EU funding bid

The head of Poland's largest Roman Catholic radio station has condemned a decision by the country's new government to block an application for a European Union grant to build a training facility for his media network, reports Ecumenical News International. "For us, this is the next act of repression. It shows where we are, who's governing us and what awaits us," said Tadeusz Rydzyk, director of Radio Maryja. Launched in 1991 by Poland's Redemptorist order, Radio Maryja ranks fifth in national ratings and it also runs a television station and a daily newspaper. However, it has faced accusations of broadcasting nationalistic and anti-Semitic commentaries.
