US religious freedom institute criticises reprint of Danish cartoon

The decision by 17 Danish newspapers to reprint a controversial cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad that caused rioting throughout the world in early 2006 has been condemned by a US religion and public policy institute, reports Ecumenical News International. Demonstrators in the Jordanian capital Amman on 25 February were reported to have burned Danish flags outside the Copenhagen embassy in a protest against the reprinting of the cartoon, while the previous day Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir threatened to expel Danish organisations and boycott the country's products. The 17 Danish newspapers asserted that their decision to re-publish the cartoon on 13 February was a sign of commitment to freedom of expression after law enforcement authorities uncovered a plot they said was aimed at killing the cartoonist who created the satiric cartoon.
