Jerusalem eases burial restrictions and approves a civil cemetery

The Jerusalem municipality has after a 10-year legal battle eased burial restrictions and approved the creation of the city's first civil cemetery. The government pays for Israeli citizens' burials, with separate cemeteries for each faith, where people are buried according to their religious traditions, reports Ecumenical News International. Jewish cemeteries in Jerusalem are maintained by ultra-Orthodox societies that conduct burials using strict criteria under Jewish law. Residents of the city seeking another type of burial had been compelled to find a private cemetery outside the city a pay a heft fee of almost US$10 000.
