Sainthood sought for Croatian cardinal jailed in communist era

The Roman Catholic Church in Croatia is preparing the canonisation of its leader during the Second World War, Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, who was believed to have been poisoned by Yugoslavia's post-war communist regime in 1960 after 14 years in jail and detention, reports Ecumenical News International. "This would be a very important step for our church," said Matilda Kolic-Stanic, spokesperson for Zagreb's Catholic archdiocese. "There's overwhelming evidence that Cardinal Stepinac treated everyone as a child of God and offered help without distinction without acting against anyone."
