Canadian churches seek restoration of justice group's funding
Churches in Canada are urging their members to write to the federal government asking it to overturn a decision to cut funding to a faith-based, ecumenical justice organization that has at times been critical of government policies, reports Ecumenical News International.
On 30 November an official with the Canadian International Development Agency, a government body, told Kairos it was ending its funding relationship because the organization no longer fits CIDA priorities.
Kairos, a Toronto-based coalition that represents seven Canadian denominations, and its predecessors have receiving federal money for overseas work since 1973.
The organization, which includes the country's largest denominations, had applied for 7 million Canadian dollars (US$6.7 million) to cover its overseas programmes until 2013.
