Tensions still simmer after Georgian, Russian patriarchs' meeting

Despite a meeting between Patriarch Kirill I of Russia and Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia, simmering tensions persist within Georgia over the stance of the Orthodox church following the brief, but bloody, August 2008 war with Russia, reports Ecumenical News International.

Both Patriarch Ilia and Kirill's predecessor, Patriarch Alexei II, spoke out against the bloodshed sparked by conflict over the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which Georgia says still belong to it.

The status of those territories and Patriarch Ilia's stand on the conflict remains a central issue in Georgian society and politics.
