Polish bishops: In vitro fertilization a "type of refined abortion"

The Bishops of Poland issued an open letter to the federal Government yesterday informing them that the Government's support for in vitro fertilization undermines their claims to be pro-life, reports John-Henry Westen, LifeSiteNews.com.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the process of artificial procreation whereby sperm and ova are combined to create embryonic children outside the womb which are then implanted in batches of 2-5 in the hopes that one child survives till birth.

In their letter the Polish Bishops called IVF "inadmissible and undignified" noting that "many embryos perish" during the procedure. The letter called it a "type of refined abortion".

"A baby is not a thing and even future parents cannot say that they have a right to the child, especially as this 'right' is always bought with the death of his or her brothers and sisters," the Bishops explained.

Public funding for IVF was an election promise of the new Prime Minister Donald Tusk of the Civic Platform party. Under the former Government Poland instituted one of the most pro-life laws regarding abortion in all of Europe.
