Church of Scotland head warns against anti-English banter in sport

The moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Rev Sheilagh Kesting, has warned that anti-English bigotry in Scotland is akin to sectarianism and should not be tolerated, reports Ecumenical News International. She stirred a recent heated debate in the Scottish press when she said that anti-English "banter" during sporting events between the two countries could be harmful and might lead to more sinister behaviour. Kesting, the leader of the Presbyterian church in Scotland, which is known locally as the Kirk, made her remarks in an address for Lent made public on 17 February after visiting London. In her address, Kesting, the first ordained woman minister to take the post of moderator of her church, said: "The conversations I had with many of the people, I met promoted reflection on whether the changed political situation will affect relations between our countries."
