Alexey Beglov, PhD, senior researcher of the World History Institute, Russian Academy of Science, professor of St Philaret’s Orthodox Christian Institute received Metropolitan Macarius prize for his book «In search of “ideal church catacombs”. Church underground in the USSR». This book tells about history of illegal church movements (which were forbidden by the Soviet legislation) during the Soviet period. Specificity of XX century history doesn’t give unequivocal estimation of this phenomenon. Moreover, today disputes arise not only over activity of the Catacomb Church, but even over the fact of their existence. The author investigates features of Soviet religious policy, in particular, reasons for illegal church occurrence. The book also talks about relations between underground church and legal church. A.L.Beglov’s book represents an attempt to characterise «catacomb church» and its influence on the subsequent church life.
