Clear rules needed for EU arms trade, say Swedish church leaders

Christian leaders in Sweden have called on the European Union to clarify its rules on arms trading in a way that corresponds with the image of the 27-nation EU as a "peace project" aimed at preventing armed conflicts, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Sweden should - together with the European Union - demand that the International Arms Trade Treaty negotiated within the U.N. framework becomes both restrictive and legally binding," the Christian Council of Sweden said in a statement.

The council noted that on 2 and 3 November an EU-U.S. leaders' meeting will take place in Washington DC to discuss, among other topics, the question of arms trade with the intention to agree on a new joint statement on non-proliferation and disarmament.
