US, Latin American church leaders join call for action on Honduras

World, U.S. and Latin American church leaders are calling on the United States and the Organization of American States to take stronger and more visible action on what they say are human right violations in Honduras.

The call, made during recent meetings in Washington DC, comes amidst reports of abuses of human rights, including rape, beatings and acts of intimidation, in the Central American country following the 28 June ousting by the military of President Manuel Zelaya.

"The repression, arrests, forced disappearances and violence directed against the population and especially against women must come to an end now," said Noemi Madrid de Espinoza, president of the Theological Community of Honduras and a member of the church delegation.
