Brazilian Bishops' pro-life campaign spreads to City Hall

In response to the Catholic bishops' call for a national campaign against abortion, the city council of João Pessoa, Brazil, has approved the creation of a "Parliamentary Front against Abortion", reports Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, LifeSiteNews.com.

Padre Adelino, the city councilman who proposed the creation of the front, says that the organization's purpose is to "make the municipal legislature an open space to broadly discuss the issue throughout the year," according to the Brazilian publication O Norte.

João Pessoa is one of Brazil's largest metropolitan areas and is a major costal resort, located on the eastern tip of Brazil, in the state of Paraíba.

The creation of the Front is part of a national campaign initiated by Brazil's Catholic bishops, called "Fraternity and the Defense of Life". The campaign seeks to take the battle against abortion and other anti-life policies to every sector of Brazilian society.

Adelino told O Norte that the bishop of the Archdiocese of Paraíba, Aldo Pagotto, would also be launching the local "Fraternity and Defense of Life" campaign from the city council chamber in João Pessoa later this month.

"On the 23rd, Dom Aldo will come to the Chamber to launch the opening of the Fraternity Campaign and for the opening and installation of the Parliamentary Front against Abortion, keeping in mind the work that the Catholic Church initiated against abortion throughout the country," he said.

Adelino explained that the Front would make known the contents of the debate over life issues to churches, neighborhood associations, schools, attorneys, and universities.
