The Russian Orthodox Church has spoken out against the reinstatement of verses praising Josef Stalin in a Moscow metro station, reports Ecumenical News International. Yet the church found itself caught in a debate during September over the legacy of a Soviet army general who joined the Nazis as a means of fighting Soviet dictator Stalin. Both cases are seen reflecting debate and confusion in Russian society over this period of its 20th century history and the growing role of the Russian Orthodox Church in public dialogue.
