Alarmed by tone of public debate, US church council calls for civility

Fearing that civic debate in the United States is becoming increasingly acrimonious and even ugly, the governing board of the National Council of Churches is calling for civility in the national discourse about public issues, such as health care, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Too much is at stake for the good of our society for us to continue down this dangerous path," the governing board said in a statement released on 25 September following meetings in New York.

"The essential nature of our national compact, to enfranchise the views of all, is imperilled in a hostile and suspicious environment."
