Japan Christians want PM to resign as new constitution advisor

Christian, interfaith and civic groups seeking protection of the Japanese peace constitution have urged the incoming prime minister to resign as constitutional advisor to the country's parliament to avoid a clash of interests, reports Ecumenical News International.

Yukio Hatoyama, the head of the Democratic Party of Japan, assumed the post in March 2008, but on 16 September he was to be sworn in as the country's new prime minister. His party won a landslide victory in elections for the lower chamber of Japan's parliament, the Diet, on 30 August.

The Liberal Democratic Party, which he pushed out, had ruled Japan for 50 years except for 10 months in 1993.
