Billy Graham continues recovery during hospital stay for elective procedure
Evangelist Billy Graham remains in fair condition at Mission Hospitals in Asheville, North Carolina, after resting well overnight, reports Michael Ireland, chief correspondent, ASSIST News Service.
He is continuing his recovery following a 28-minute elective valve replacement procedure on Wednesday to regulate pressure in his brain, needed due to a long-standing hydrocephalus condition.
His neurosurgeon, Ralph C. Loomis, MD, said that results of a post-operative CT scan of the brain, routine following this procedure, were encouraging.
“It looks fine,” Dr. Loomis said of Mr. Graham’s CT study. “He’s doing well, and is alert and articulate. We’re pleased with his progress.”
This morning the 89 year-old evangelist was put on a regular diet, beginning with a large breakfast. Physical therapists began working with him today on sitting, standing and walking, and will continue with a daily regimen of exercise while he is in the hospital.
His family reports that he is in good spirits, eating full meals, and watching local and national news. No date has been set for his discharge, but he is expected to remain as an inpatient for several days so that the shunt system can be gradually adjusted with the new externally programmable valve.
