New church council leader offers support to indigenous peoples

The newly elected general secretary of the World Council of Churches has said he very is concerned about the situation of "First peoples" around the world and has suggested practises from his home country of Norway may be a model for other nations in dealing with their indigenous populations, reports Ecumenical News International.

At a press conference following his election on 28 August, the Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit, from the (Lutheran) Church of Norway, said dealing with the issues facing indigenous people "will be on my agenda as it also important for the World Council of Churches".
