Lutheran HealthCare hosts Brooklyn’s newest Farmer's Market

To promote affordable healthy dietary options to Sunset Park residents, Lutheran HealthCare (LHC) and Harvest Home Farmer's Market, Inc., are pleased to announce that a weekly farmer's market will be held on Lutheran Lane (55th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues). The market will be held every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 19, reports Lutheran HealthCare.

The open-air market will feature fresh vegetables, fruits, organic breads and more from N.Y. area farmers. Additionally, the Lutheran market will also offer health information and screenings from the medical center, the health center network, and affiliates. To help increase access, the market will be approved to redeem most meal and benefit programs like WIC, EBT, Health Bucks, and others.

"With the creation of this new farmer's market, and along with our community partner Harvest Home Farmer's Market, we hope to provide our surrounding community with fresh food and healthy ideas," said Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO of Lutheran HealthCare. "Ideally, we want our Sunset Park and southwest Brooklyn neighbors to have more options and choices to lead healthier lifestyles."

"I would like to thank Lutheran and its Green Team for extending an invitation to help establish this market," said Maritza Wellington Owens, founder of Harvest Home Farmer's Market, Inc. "Harvest Home will offer a traditional farmer's market that will help ensure the availability of safe, fresh, nutritious and affordable food for Sunset Park's residents." Harvest Home Farmer's Market, Inc. (HHFM), is a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage economic opportunities in communities by bringing fresh produce and locally made goods to the neighborhoods they serve. HHFM has been in operation since 1993 and also operates farmer's markets in Mott Haven, Highbridge/Grand Concourse, Co-op City, Castle Hill and Morris Park.

Lutheran's new farmer's market is part of larger effort to "go green" across the Lutheran family. In 2008, LHC created a system wide Green Team to assist its facilities in operating in an environmentally sound manner. The team regularly examines energy conservation measures and product purchases. In May, Lutheran joined Mayor Bloomberg's "PlaNYC Mayor's Challenge," his citywide goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030. Lutheran's most recent greening project to retrofit lighting throughout the main medical center, will not only reduce its carbon footprint by 1.8 million pounds a year but also save energy and about $180,000 annually.
