World church grouping told it needs 'new sources of income'

Preliminary financial results for 2007 show that the World Council of Churches made a surplus of 2.87 million Swiss francs (US$ 1.8 million) instead of a budgeted deficit of 69 000 Swiss francs, the church grouping's main governing body has been told, reports Ecumenical News International. A principal reason for the surplus was the "favourable impact" of currency exchange rates in 2007 between the euro and the Swiss franc, the moderator of the WCC's finance committee, the Rev. Anders Gadegaard, said in his 13 February report to the council's central committee. He was speaking on the first of eight days of meetings.
