17 people appear in court over murder of Catholic priest in Kenya

Seventeen people have been charged with the murder of a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Nakuru during the post-election violence that gripped Kenya in January, reports CISA News.

The suspects were arraigned before Nakuru Principal Magistrate, Gilbert Mutembei, on Monday. The charge read that on January 26, together with others not before the court, and using crude weapons, they killed Fr. Michael Kamau Ithondeka at Muserechi trading center in Eldama Ravine. They proceeded to set his car ablaze.

The suspects will plead on March 5 after the police finalize investigations.

Fr. Kamau, 41, was killed at an illegal roadblock set up by armed youth on the Nakuru - Eldama Ravine Road. He was vice rector at St Mathias Mulumba Senior Seminary in Tindinyo.

Speaking to CISA in Nakuru, the lawyer for the accused, Gordon Ogolla, said the police had arrested innocent people while leaving the real suspects. He urged the police to go to the area where the incident occured and arrest the real culprits as those in custody had simply been picked up at the Muserechi trading center a day after the priest’s death.
