Ukraine prays for people living with HIV/AIDS

On 1 December 2007, World AIDS Day was marked in Kyiv near the Chervona Strichka Memorial (Red Ribbon) in Kyiv. The annual event aims to draw public attention to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and express solidarity with HIV-positive people.

Archdeacon Serhii Kosovskyi, head of the Synodal Department of Charity and Social Service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) who participated in the event, stressed that every effort should be made to overcome the pandemic in Ukraine.

This year’s commemoration was marked by protest of Ukraine’s state policy on HIV/AIDS. In particular, the head of the Coordination Council of the All-Ukrainian Network of PLWH (People Living with HIV/AIDS) accused state bodies of corruption, which result in the acquisition of defective medicine for HIV treatment.
