Afghanistan security said to depend on aid, not just military force

For months some foreign policy experts in the United States have asserted that Afghanistan, faced with a resurgent Taliban, is sliding into an abyss and that an increased US and NATO military presence is needed to strengthen security within the country, reports Ecumenical News International. A recent report by the Washington-based Afghanistan Study Group asserted that "success in Afghanistan" requires "a sustained, multi-year commitment from the US and a willingness to make the war in Afghanistan - and the rebuilding of that country - a higher US foreign policy priority". But humanitarian organizations argue that in Western debates about Afghanistan the voices of Afghans themselves are often not present, and insufficient space is given to their views of the US military and humanitarian presence in their countries.
