Church defends citizens facing power outage in Ukraine
On 10 December 2007, the Orthodox in southern Ukraine’s Kherson headed by clergymen of the Kherson Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) picketed the City Administration building to call attention to a major power outage in the city, as RISU’s correspondent in Kherson, Olena Kulyhina, reported.
Archbishop Damian (Zamarayev) of Kherson and Tavria addressed the Kherson City Administration and voiced his concern over the situation in Kherson with energy and heat supply, explaining that their action was not intended to evoke opposition with the city authorities. Rather, the Orthodox Christians would like to express that they care and demonstrate their civic position on the matter.
“The fact that so many people have come to the square only proves that they have not lost hope for a solution to the problem,” said Archbishop Damian at the rally.
“The Bible says our struggle is not against people or authorities. We have come not to offend or demand. We have come to pray so that the city could have heat,” noted Father Yevhen Sydorenko, the minister of the Holy Trinity Church.
