Zambian bishop cautions president on plans to close newspaper

The Zambian-based International Fellowship of Christian Churches has said the country's president, Rupiah Banda, should focus his attention on dealing with the many problems his nation faces rather than preoccupying himself with plans to close a national newspaper, reports Ecumenical News International.

"The Post is the only print media that has stood the test of time to allow readers to have a choice from a government newspaper," the IFCC's Bishop Simon Chihana said in a statement issued in Lusaka on 18 March.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa, a press rights group, has described The Post as Zambia's leading media organization because it says the newspaper has the largest circulation in the country and, in relation to the fight against corruption and promotion of good governance, also the most influence.
