Hieronymos of Thebes elected head of Greek Orthodox church

Metropolitan Hieronymos of Thebes has been elected the new Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, and, as such the head of the (Orthodox) Church of Greece, Greek State television and local news agencies have announced, reports Ecumenical News International. The 70-year-old cleric was elected on 7 February by the church's Holy Synod on a second round of voting with 45 votes of the total of 74 metropolitan bishops present. Hieronymos succeeds Archbishop Christodoulos, who died of cancer on 28 January. Church observers had said before his election that Hieronymoswas was known to have good relations with the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos I, who is often seen as the spiritual head of Orthodox believers worldwide.
