Russian Orthodox official backs Pope's criticism of condoms

A senior Russian Orthodox Church official has backed remarks by Pope Benedict XVI on the use of condoms to combat AIDS, and said his church upholds similar teachings on this and other ethical issues, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Virtually everyone in our church shares the opinion that a person's moral upbringing and the propagation of Christian values are the best way to avoid the spread of AIDS," the Rev. Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations, told Ecumenical News International. He said, " Neither condoms nor medicines can save people who live sinful and senseless lives."
