Protestants in northwest Germany look to form united church

The five regional Protestant churches in Lower Saxony in northwest Germany are considering forming a united church, a step once considered "unthinkable", reports Ecumenical News International.

"Pooling our resources makes sense especially in difficult times," said Bishop Margot Kässmann, who heads the largest of the five churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover.

They belong to Germany's main Protestant umbrella, the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), and make up a confederation in Lower Saxony intended to strengthen their dealings with regional state authorities as well as their communication and legal operations.
