Asian theologians warn: Fundamentalism can harm faiths

Christian communities should critically examine current religious resurgence and avoid the spread of fundamentalism that can harm human rights, theologians from the Global South have said at a Lutheran World Federation seminar in Hong Kong, reports Ecumenical News International. "The growth of religions in India provides the country with more welfare activities. But on the other hand, the rise of fundamentalism is destructive," the Rev. Busi Suneel Bhanu of the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in India told Ecumenical News International. "Fundamentalism in religions does harm to human rights, and the caste system is an example. We need to understand and make use of the positive sides of the religious resurgence and make a contribution to the society," Bhanu said after the 28 January meeting. His comments came after an outbreak of violence between Hindus and Christians in India's Orissa state recently.
