Most Influential Christian Leaders of 2007 Named

IN VICTORY Christian magazine and the Christian Telegraph news agency owned by one of the most influential Christian media group in Russian-speaking world InVictory Media have jointly released a list of Christian leaders chosen because of their influence on Russian-speaking Christians throughout the world. Each January for the past three years In Victory has summed up the events of the previous year which were most significant to the development and growth of Christianity; the new People of the Year list will recognize significant individuals as well.

“When choosing events and people, we tried to estimate how much of an impact the actions of Christian leaders had. We also studied how often their names appeared in the Christian news. We made ongoing decisions throughout this year, ” said Sergey Sergienko, chief editor for IN VICTORY magazine. “In our opinion each one of these ministers made noteworthy accomplishments during the past year, exerting maximum effort to widen and strengthen Christian influence”.

Here is the full People of the Year list for 2007:


Yuriy Sipko, Russia

Bishop of the Year

Yuriy Sipko, Russia

As the chairman of the Russian Union of Evangelical Baptist Christians, Yuriy Sipko proved himself to be one of the most progressive Russian Evangelical leaders of 2007, making the spiritual education of youth the focus of his ministry. A transcontinental cycling expedition called “Gospel to the Nations of the World” was one of the most successful events he sponsored in 2007.


Igor Nikitin, Russia

Patron of the Year

Igor Nikitin, Russia

The president of two influential Christian television channels, TBN Russia and TBN Ukraine, Igor Nikitin made an important contribution towards strengthening the spiritual values of Russia. In 2007 he became the patron of the Russian television channel “Smile of a Child,” whose goal is to lay the right foundation in the heart of every child. “Smile of a Child” was officially recognized by the Russian government as one of the most successful projects of the year. Mr. Nikitin has also organized social actions which benefit kids.


Joyce Meyer, USA

Teacher of the Year

Joyce Meyer, USA

Although she runs one of the major Bible teaching ministries in the USA, Joyce Meyer never tires of strengthening Christian values in the countries of the former USSR. In spite of the high cost of broadcasting them, her television programs are shown in almost every city and town. In 2007 Ms. Meyer came to Ukraine especially to take part in a large Christian conference held by the influential Ukrainian Hillsong church.


Lika Roman, Ukraine

Winner of the year

Lika Roman, Ukraine

An ordinary Christian girl from a town in western Ukraine, LikaRoman turned down a modeling career because of the immoral principles involved in it. This year she won the “Miss Ukraine 2007” title. Ms. Roman says it was God who helped her to win. The most beautiful girl of Ukraine plans to use her new position to bring the Gospel to other people.


Kenneth Copeland, USA

Preacher of the year

Kenneth Copeland, USA

A world-famous preacher, Kenneth Copeland has had a great influence on Russian-speaking Christians. Both Christians and non-Christians watch his “Believer’s Voice of Victory” television program all over Ukraine. In 2007 Copeland organized a television series with Baptist leader and US Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. In spite of the liberalization of much of American Christianity, Kenneth Copeland continues to stand for biblical values in that society.


Maxim Maximov, Kazakhstan

Broadcaster of the year

Maxim Maximov, Kazakhstan

The CNL Christian television channel founded by Maxim Maximov is among the most dynamic and expaning Christian channels. Because of CNL, Slavic Christians have gained access to the sermons of the world's most famous preachers. This pastor from Kazakhstan tirelessly organizes conferences around the world as well as teaching Russian-speaking Christians all about teleproduction. In 2007 the CNL broadcast was so widely distributed that it resulted in the foundation of the Ukrainian CNL channel.


Mikhail Morgulis, USA

Diplomat of the year

Mikhail Morgulis, USA

As head of the international Christian “spiritual diplomacy” movement, Mikhail Morgulis has received God's gift of favor with secular leaders throughout the world. Carrying the message of peace and God’s love, he travels around the world, meeting with presidents and high-ranking politicical figures and telling them about God. In 2007 Mikhail Morgulis met with a number of leaders in the former USSR countries. He was personally invited to dine with Ukrainian president Victor Yushchenko.


Alexey Ledyaev, Latvia

Ecumenist of the year

Alexey Ledyaev, Latvia

One of our most brilliant contemporary preachers has facilitated a number of very important ecumenical events during the past year. By coordinating all the Christian denominations of Latvia to bring about the successful National Family Holiday, the pastor of New Generation church proved that by uniting, Christians can influence their society much more effectively. As one of the founders of the international Christian human rights organization “Watchmen on the Walls,” Pastor Ledyaev also participated in the 2007 World Congress of Families. The event, held in Warsaw, Poland, united pro-family Christians from many different denominations and countries.

Alexy II, Russia

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II has signed the Act Regarding

Canonical Communication together with the Supreme Pontiff of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Metropolite of East America and New York. Through this agreement the church leaders have restored the formal unity of the Russian Orthodox Church. Alexy II is continuing to strengthen the Orthodox Church, to educate school children, and to introduce a program titled “Foundations of the Orthodox Culture” into schools. He has taken these forward-looking stands despite sharp criticism.


Sunday Adelaja, Ukraine

Reformer of the Year

Sunday Adelaja, Ukraine

Sunday Adelaja is pastor of God’s Embassy church in Kiev, now the biggest church in Europe. In 2007 Sunday made a crucial decision for his ministry – to reform the Christian church in the USA and Europe. Following his decision, Pastor Adelaja has become more active in America and several European countries. If the African pastor achieves his goal, it will also greatly influence Christianity in the post-Soviet countries. To date Pastor Adelaja has built a very effective local church and has gained much influence in Ukraine at the national level. Together with the pastor of the New Generation Church, Alexey Ledyaev, Pastor Sunday was invited by the Global Pastors' Network to take part in the administration of the “Million Souls” program.


Pat Robertson, USA

Minister of the Year

Pat Robertson, USA

Pat Robertson, businessman, world- renowned tele-evangelist, and a conservative political figure who has run for U.S. President, is also the founder of the Christian Coalition, The Christian Broadcasting Network, Regent University, The American Center for Law & Justice, Operation Blessing International. Pat Robertson has taken stands against abortion and the legitimization of homosexuality. As a financially successful Christian, Mr. Robertson invests his money in the production of Christian television programs in the Russian language. Almost every child in the post-Soviet countries is now familiar with the Bible stories and Robik cartoon character featured on these programs. Pat Robertson, now 77, is still Chairman of the Board of CBN, host of The 700 Club daily TV program and President of Regent University.


Alexander Shevchenko, USA

Producer of the Year

Alexander Shevchenko, USA

Alexander Shevchenko is one of the first ministers to begin evangelizing in the Russian language on television. His television programs have become so popular that he has had to open new offices in Kiev, Moscow, Minsk and Riga. His organization, Corner International Ministry, now distributes hundreds of thousands of CDs and tapes each year. In 2007, CIM produced several new television programs, and in August the organization signed an agreement of mutual informational support with the TBN-Russia channel. Alexander Shevchenko is also a pastor of one of the youngest and most dynamic Russian churches in the USA, the “House of Bread.”

Rick Renner, Russia-Ukraine

Rick Renner became one of the first ministers to break into the field of post-Soviet TV broadcasting; through television he has been able to reach not only big cities but small towns and villages with the Gospel. His current ministry is that of an apostle and church planter: he has built successful churches in Riga and Moscow. His Good News church, opened in Kiev on March 17, 2007, rapidly became very popular due to its excellent promotional and PR campaign and superior administration. Pastor Renner also serves as the head of the Good News Association of Churches. He has brought such prominent Christian speakers as John Avanzini, Rob Thomson and Peter Daniels to minister at the churches in Kiev and Moscow.


Allan C. Carlson, USA

Allan C. Carlson, USA

A distinguished analyst and researcher of the history of the family and its influence on the moral foundations of society, Allan Carlson is president of the unique Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society, a research, information and social-policy-recommending organization. Mr. Carlson is also the founder of the World Congress of Families, which brings together Christians of all denominations to protect family values. In 2007 the Congress was held in Warsaw, Poland. This was an unprecedented event for the countries of the former USSR. The Congress featured speakers and panel discussions on different strategies for advancing Christian moral values around the world, and for dealing with such problems as government promotion of pornography and gay propaganda.


Alexander Turchinov, Ukraine

Politician of the Year

Alexander Turchinov, Ukraine

A Baptist minister with a doctorate in economic sciences, Alexander Turchinov became Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine after the victory of democratic factions during the elections and the election of Yulia Timoshenko as Prime Minister. Turchinov showed himself as a logical and competent politician who doesn’t accept compromises. Notably, in 2007 Turchinov said that the democratic movement which he represents will not allow the moral degeneration of the Ukrainian society and emphasized that the authority in Ukraine should be spiritual.


Boris Perchatkin, USA

Human Rights Defender of the Year

Boris Perchatkin, USA

Because of the work of Boris Perchatkin, hundreds of thousands of persecuted Christians from the Soviet Union received asylum in the United States of America. For many years, despite the risk of punishment and numerous threats on his life, Perchatkin continued to inform people in Western society of the awful violations of religious liberty in the USSR, which were carefully hidden by the government. For his pro-Christian activities, the atheistic government of the Soviet Union twice sentenced him to terms of penal service in labor camps. He spent many years of his life in such camps, suffering imprisonment and torture for Christ and his faith. In 2007 Boris Perchatkin fearlessly stood up against the persecution of Protestant churches in Russia, providing documentary videos to the U.S. State Department and to the media.


Gordon Showell-Rogers, Great Britain

General Secretary of the Year

Gordon Showell-Rogers, Great Britain

Gordon Showell-Rogers is the General Secretary of the European Evangelical Alliance, the influential Christian organization which is part of the World Evangelical Alliance. Under the leadership of Showell-Rogers, the Alliance has significantly influenced the political and social processes of European countries by representing the opinions and interests of Evangelical believers. Also because prompt and effective protests by the Alliance, a highly offensive and immoral brochure published by the German government, which instructed fathers to stimulate the genitals of their young daughters, was retracted.


Sergey Shidlovskiy, Ukraine

Prayer Warrior of the Year

Sergey Shidlovskiy, Ukraine

Sergey Shidlovskiy is the founder and leader of the God Seekers movement. Thousands of people have experienced changed lives, renewed relationships with God and the entire transformation of their prayerlife, and these are only a few of the blessings that have come from this ministry. Originally from a town in Belarus, Sergey Shidlovskiy has managed to win the hearts of people from many countries around the globe. His work is endorsed by many well-known Christian ministers, his books have been translated into several languages, and his school and training program, called “Panuel,” has become a sensation. In 2007 Sergey organized many prayer seminars and fasts (“Fasts for God”) in different countries of the world, in addition to broadcasting his programs on television.


Franklin Graham, USA

Franklin Graham preaches the Gospel in many countries of the world. In 2007 the evangelist brought to Ukraine the amazing Festival of Hope, held in the biggest stadium of the country and broadcast to many other nations worldwide. Christians from fifteen denominations took part in the organization of the festival, joining the Christian Revival Center (under the auspices of Evangelical Association of Billy Graham) to realize such a massive project. During the year before the festival organizers carried out some charitable and humanitarian projects, including a bike ride and a climbing trip on Goverla Mountain. The President of Ukraine addressed his greetings to the attendees of the festival, and many celebrities participated as well.


Evgeniy and Vera Kasevich, Ukraine

Almsgivers of the Year

Evgeniy and Vera Kasevich, Ukraine

Evgeniy and Vera Kasevich are pastors of the influential and dynamic Hillsong church in Kiev. Today this couple has gained the reputation of being dynamic leaders, teachers and preachers. Their strong and accessible message influences many people, not just in Ukraine, but also in other countries. In 2007 the Hillsong pastors opened a new church in Moscow. At their invitation, the legendary Christian rock group “Delirious,” Bible teacher Joyce Meyer, preacher and author of many books John Bevere, and worship leader Darlene Zschech have all come to Kiev. Among other things Pastors Evgeniy and Vera initiated a number of charitable programs inside and outside Ukraine. Through these programs many poor children in African countries receive year-round material aid directly from the members of Hillsong church.
