Zambian churches: Jailing of pastor, ex-lands minister, a 'lesson'

The Independent Churches of Zambia and the New Apostolic Church have described the four-year prison sentence meted out to former government lands minister, the Rev. Gladys Nyirongo, due to criminal land allocation, as a bitter lesson for the Church in Zambia.

Nyirongo, who comes from the Reformed Church in Zambia, was sentenced by Lusaka magistrate Sharon Kaunda Newa on 13 February to serve four years in jail.

She has, however, appealed to the Lusaka High Court against the sentence and has been released on bail of 60 million kwacha (about US$10 700), pending appeal.
