Cardinal Sandri stresses crucial role of Ukrainian Catholic Church
As part of the UGCC Greek Catholic bishops’ visit “Ad Limina Apostolorum,” referring to an official visit to the Vatican, the delegation met on 29 January 2008 with His Excellency Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, reports RISU. During the meeting the Cardinal stated that he is preparing to visit Ukraine during the summer months. He also emphasized the importance of ecumenical collaboration, stressing that the role of the UGCC is “fundamental to the constellation of Eastern Catholic Churches.”
Cardinal Sandri stated, “The role of your church, as the largest and best developed, especially from the viewpoint of pastoral care, with your very promising education and cultural institutions of which you should be proud, is fundamental to the Eastern Catholic Church, and not just among those who belong to the Byzantine Rite.” He added that, “Eastern Christian believers, many among them living in different parts of the world and especially in Western Europe, look upon the Ukrainian church with admiration and trust. The self-renewal of your church and the way you are able to send forth a humane and spiritual pastoral call to so many immigrants of the Greek Catholic faith can bring much good to Eastern Catholicism.” The Ukrainian edition of Radio Vatican reported the story.
