Sudan problems could unravel peace accord, says US religion body

A fragile peace agreement that ended a north-south war in Sudan is fraying, a U.S. commission on religious freedom has warned, and it is urging President Barack Obama to appoint a special envoy to Sudan and to make Africa's biggest country a foreign policy priority, reports Ecumenical News International.

"The peace plan that has brought such hope to the north-south Sudan conflict is in danger of unravelling, and effective action by the new administration is needed to ensure that the plan goes forward," Felice D. Gaer, chairperson of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, said in an 11 February statement.
