US religious leaders claim victory with Obama's ban on torture

Religious leaders who oppose torture are claiming an early victory with the administration of Barack Obama, applauding the new U.S. president for banning torture on his second day in office.

The four executive orders Obama signed on 22 January close the Guantanamo Bay prison, require the Central Intelligence Agency to comply with the U.S. Army Field Manual on Interrogations, close secret prisons known as "black sites" and allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to ensure that U.S.-held detainees are treated in compliance with the Geneva Conventions.
