Christian radio reaches urban areas in Latin America

Trans World Radio is broadcasting a series of radio programs to megacities in Latin America, reports MNN. Of the 50 cities in Latin America and the Caribbean that have more than one million people, 40 percent of the urban population live those cities.

So far, TWR has "lit up" 14 of those cities with their City Lights programming in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The programs cover every age group. There are two for children, two for teens, two for women, a family broadcast, and one general Biblical teaching program.

In the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo, more than 70 percent of the working population lives in the sector where urban problems tend to result in poverty. The poverty rate is 45 percent in the entire city. Besides population, the demographics and economy of the city make it the second most-important city in the country. TWR is also focusing on Caracas.

TWR-Venezuela director Annabel Torrealba and her team host puppet shows that relate to the radio programs.

Last year, a location change for the Dominican Republic TWR staff helps the team minister more effectively. They produce three of the main City Lights programs.

TWR-Dominican Republic director Georgina Thompson said City Lights gives them the opportunity to reach even more people in specific cities.

They have received positive feedback from youth and adults regarding the broadcasts.
