'Joking' political prayer in Philippines provokes indignation

Church leaders have joined government critics in berating a Philippine presidential spokesperson for "politicizing prayer", when national television filmed him praying for an extension of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's term of office, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Bless the president so she will have the forbearance, good health and tolerance to lead this nation up to 2010 and perhaps, who knows, even beyond," press secretary Jesus Dureza prayed at the opening of a Cabinet meeting on 18 November. Dureza later said he was joking, adding, "God must have a sense of humor."
