Bulgarians can't agree on compulsory religious education proposal

A proposal by an advisory council to Bulgaria's Education Ministry to make religion a required subject in the first seven years of school has triggered severe criticism from religious and secular quarters, reports Ecumenical News International. In recent years, the country - officially atheist in the years of communist rule but in which most of the 7.7 million population profess allegiance to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church - has allowed religious education as an optional subject. The proposal was unveiled on 28 January at a discussion attended by members of the education ministry's public council, an advisory group, and by education minister Daniel Vulchev. It focused on educating children about religions rather than instruction in a single faith. It proposed teaching children about ethical issues including cloning and abortion.
